The purpose of this study is two folds: first, to investigate the relative dominance between foreignization and domestication in the translation of The Vegetarian and second, to discuss its ramification for the translation of Korea literature in the future.
The analysis of The Vegetarian reveals a marked preference and high evaluation for a fluent, transparent, smooth translation. High evaluation for the fluent and smooth translation performed by translator Deborah Smith presents an important question for translation of Korean literature: should other Korean literary texts be also translated in a target-text reader friendly way? As to such question, the current study suggests that fluent translation should not be a cure-all remedy for translation of Korean literary texts, as the method runs the risk of naturalizing the unique and distinctive features of Korean literature. By way of conclusion, the present study proposes the two following points. Nurturing competent ‘Korean’ translators is an equally urgent and important issue considering the huge amount of Korean literature, both classical and modern, not available in foreign languages. Secondly, domesticating translation, a method highly touted in media in the wake of The Vegetarian, should be cautiously approached in translation of Korean literature.
