This research attempted to analyze characteristics of Korean EFL students’ English essays, lexically and logically. In order to attain the objective, the research questions were built as follows; 1) how students used vocabulary in their essays, 2) how they presented their sentences and paragraphs logically. Twenty-four English essays were analyzed. Also, students’ test scores of vocabulary, grammar, and short-sentence writing were collected. Indices of lexis by primary traits measurement and a qualitative perusal were utilized to analyze those essays. The result of data analysis revealed that essays written by EFL college students did not meet the minimum requirement for essay writing. First, it has been found out that, as the number of words increases, the number of sentences increases. Also, writing a coherent and logical essay needs just more than learners’ vocabulary knowledge. It might need more social, cultural background knowledge, that will also contribute to writing a logical and fluent essay. Finally, implications for teaching English writing in the EFL classroom and suggestions for further research are presented.
