From a conversation analytic framework, this paper examines a self-reparative operation observed in Korean conversation, whereby speakers replace a word choice with a more enhanced version. The analysis of the practice, named supplementing here, aimed to explicate what consequences it brings onto a trouble source and where and how it is initiated and carried out. It was shown that supplementing augments a word choice with additional information, rather than cancels out the word to proffer a whole new solution, and that a supplement is tagged on at the boundary of a lexical chunk that contains a trouble source. Based on the observation that supplementing treats a trouble source as an entity that deserves further work for the job it is deployed to do, the analysis was further carried out to reveal that supplementing is largely used to optimize the recognizabilty of various referential choices. Finally, additional points regarding the use of supplementing are also discussed, including the import of the practice for use in Korean conversation.
