This study investigates the effects of topic and language ability on the syntactic complexity of Korean high school students’ English writing. The participants were 106 second year students selected from six classes in a general high school. They were divided into four groups, and the data obtained were analyzed using Lu’s (2011) Web-based L2 Syntactic Complexity Analyzer. According to the results, a significant difference was found among the groups in 7 out of 14 complexity indices. Out of the seven indices two showed an independent effect of topic, four showed an independent effect of language ability, and two showed the interaction effect between topic and language ability. The findings suggest that both topic and language ability can affect the syntactic complexity of high school students’ writing, but the effects are limited to some features only. However, the study also recognizes the possibility of different results depending on different degrees of topic familiarity and students’ TL ability. Some suggestions are made for further research and EFL writing instruction.
