There are two opposing views on the relationship between the meaning of a sentence and the elements comprising the sentence. The experimental study of Healy and Miller (1970) supports that verb is the main determinant of sentence meaning. Bencini and Goldberg (2000), on the other hand, propose that the overall meaning of a sentence is determined by its argument structure construction rather than the main verb per se. In this study, four sentence sorting tasks were implemented to test these hypotheses. In Tasks 1 and 2, Korean L1 speakers were asked to categorize simple transitive sentences in terms of overall semantic similarity. In Tasks 3 and 4, the aforementioned two studies were replicated with Korean learners of L2 English at different levels of proficiency. Main findings are as follows: (a) Verb was perceived as the core determinant of sentence meaning in Korean as well as in English. (b) The rate of categorizing sentences according to identical subjects was significantly higher for L2 English than for L1 Korean; This peculiarity of learner language suggests that the learners at an early stage of development tend to comprehend sentence meaning on the basis of subject and only later do they rely more on verb or construction schema. (c) Many learners recognized L2 constructional patterns even though they were not able to interpret them accurately. (d) As the learners’ proficiency and learning experience increased, they were more likely to categorize the meaning of a sentence with respect to its construction type.
