The present study investigated lexical complexity in academic oral presentations across proficiency levels and gender. Seventy-five Korean college students learning English as a foreign language participated in this study. The participants’ proficiency levels were divided into three groups (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) using a hierarchical cluster analysis. The lexical complexity was measured using lexical complexity analyzer (Lu, 2012), consisting of three primary lexical complexity components, i.e. lexical density, lexical sophistication, and lexical variation. The results revealed that only lexical variation showed significant progress across proficiency. Additionally, female students scored higher than male students in only lexical variation. Thus, only lexical variation showed significant difference across proficiency and gender in oral presentations. Pedagogical implications were discussed along with the research findings.
